How We Can Help
North Carolina needs general surgeons in rural areas, but it is challenging to develop the rural surgery training that would enhance surgeons' confidence and interest in rural practice. East Carolina University's surgery program director is committed to developing rural training opportunities for residents in his program. Our NCGME team recently connected him with a surgery program director in Wisconsin who has successfully developed significant rural training to share ideas and effective strategies to increase rural training. We will continue to meet with the ECU team to assist with identifying ways to include and increase rural training opportunities for surgery residents.
